Lady Sov @ Bowery 10/29: Give this Chav an ASBO

I didn't take any pictures at the Lady Sovereign concert last month. After waiting through a 10 minute long intro by the dj to see the biggest little midget finally come on stage and toss her beer onto the crowd, my heart just wasn't in it. Instead, I lingered in the back standing next to a gorgeous Dan Keyes dancing with his gorgeous girlfriend. I stayed through a few songs and thought it was decent but decided to leave when Lady Sov stole someone's full beer from the front row, and then when the guy asked for it back, poured the full cup over his head. After this, I promptly turned around and strode out the door. Somebody needs to issue this girl an ASBO. I hate obnoxious, hateful behaviour like that. Especially because so many of those kids up front were so excited to see the teen chav that they got to the venue early, wearing her merch with a side-pony tail sticking out the side of their head, just for the opportunity to stand against the stage during the show.

In person, I thought Lady Sov was ok. Her stage presence is good and her performance was spot on from the album. I liked it but I couldn't help but think, do I like this more than I should simply because her act is a bit of a schtick, coming from a wee English girl? Before the show, the two music industry people next to me questioned whether or not Lady Sov would live up to the hype. That seemed to be the attitude for most of the crowd. Everyone seemed to be there just to finally see the Midget in person. Me included. I think that vibe was felt by Sov as well. It seemed as if she came out expecting a raucous hip-hop crowd when all she got were apathetic , lower Manhattanites there just to see the spectacle, and she couldn't help but show her disappointment with a little animosity.
