The World Of B-Sides & Rarities, #89

Air - Mer Du Japon (Teenagers remix)

In spite of being considerably disappointed with Air's latest album, Pocket Symphony (mini-review can be read here), I still believe that the LP's 'Mer Du Japon' stands as one of the French duo's strongest tunes to date.

This remix of the track, as created by The Teenagers, is equally sexy, dirty, Depeche Mode-esque and dancefloor-ready. Exquisite!

Review: Air - Pocket Symphony

When Air told us that they were going to mellow out with their latest release, Pocket Symphony, they really weren't joking around. Each of the album's twelve tracks could serve as the perfect soundtrack to a 2am walk through the snow.

Whereas their last opus, Talkie Walkie, featured melodic ('Venus') and catchy ('Cherry Blossom Girl') tunes, Pocket Symphony's songs tend to not be as instantly memorable. In fact, other than 'Mer Du Japon' and 'Napalm Love', it's hard to remember the lyrics or refrain to any of the other tracks, even after about 8 or so listens.

I have a strong feeling that Pocket will definitely be a grower, as the year progresses. It also has the potential to completely take form in their live shows (none announced as of this post). As is the case with most Air albums (not including Moon Safari), some time is needed to fully grasp what the French duo is trying to get across, Pocket Symphony is no exception to the rule.

The album comes out in February through Astralwerks, but here's a sample for your aural pleasure.

Air Has A Heart-On For Philip Glass

I cannot wait for the new Air album, Pocket Symphony!!

In an interview released today through Billboard, Air tells all. Seems like the band has been 'in a very zen mood' and have been 'very influenced by classical music' for the upcoming release (out on March 6). In particular, they cite Philip Glass as their main tourguide, if you will, for this new one.

Tracklist for Pocket Symphony: Space Maker/Once Upon a Time/Hell of a Party/Napalm Love/Mayfair Song/Left Bank/Photograph/Mer du Japon/Lost Message/Somewhere Between Walking and Sleeping/Redhead Girl/Night Sight
