Beth Ditto Bares Her Soul To 'Spin'
Here are some snippets from her recent Q&A session.Do you find it at all marginalizing to be on Music With A Twist, a Columbia subsidiary for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender artists?
No, I love being on a queer label. You're sitting in a room with a group of people who have all the same reference points as you, you don't have to explain anything about your identity to them, and people aren't like, "What's a tranny?" It's not about integration versus segregation; it's just a way to get the music out there.
You've said that you think being a bigger, gay woman might have held the band back from mainstream success, but do you think it's also worked to your advantage?
I never would say that it worked to our advantage, but I think it's a breath of fresh air for a lot of people. And you gotta play the game. If you can work it, then you work it no matter what. And talent transcends all those things.
What do you make of the fact that the Gossip are very popular in the U.K. but not nearly as well known over here?
Sometimes I think of America as this imperial child of England that doesn't know what to do until England tells it. But I'm ready for the backlash over there. It's coming!

The Silent Years Make it to Round Four...
of the Spin Artist of the Year Contest. Why this contest is still going on when we are already nearly 3 months into 2007, I have no clue but the news that one of our favourite groups are in the final four is pretty exciting. The Silent Years are up against Boys Like Girls while The Rewinds vs. Sam Roberts Band. You can go vote now.Spin is giving a lot of love to the bands in our Spring Fling showcase actually. Locksley have an adorable full page photoshoot and article in this month's issue.
Speaking of Spin, they named O'death their artist of the day on the 20th. O'death, the little band that could. They have just been signed to Gigantic Records and all those heading to SXSW can catch them in the label's showcase there. Did I ever tell you that I used to be Greg O'death's managing editor on our high school literary magazine? Um not to brag or nothing, but we won the top prize for best HS literary magazine in the country that year...I'm just saying.
