What you do that for?

I wasn't sure that I wanted to like Lily Allen - although I enjoyed the interview with her in the Observer a few months ago, a lot of bloggers and music magazines have been comparing her to the Streets. And I loathe the Streets, as you may or may not recall. I really hate the Streets. Really really really hate the Streets.

Anyway, I wasn't predisposed to like Alright, Still. But 'Smile' has been all over the radio (yes, it is possible to avoid the proliferation of Allen demos, etc, if you really really try), and it's a perfect summer-pop record; slyly clever observations on the humdrum (such as mortgages, bad credit and that staple meal, spaghetti bolognese on 'Everything's Just Wonderful'), and, bonus of bonuses, Allen can actually sing. I'll admit that the cod-ska approach isn't something that appeals to me overly; but tracks like LDN have managed to win me over (mainly due to the quality of Allen's singing). Other tracks like 'Shame for you' show that Allen has a wicked way with a big pop tune (and a wicked sense of humour).

Preorder Alright, Still from Amazon (due out on the 17th July)
