Elliot Smith, Either/Or, Classic Album #5
I remember the morning I heard about Elliott Smith's passing, quite vividly. I was at work sipping a cup of tea and clicked over to Pitchfork to read "Elliott Smith Dead At 34". I was motionless. In shock, saddened and confused. I never got the chance to see him live, only to appreciate him on disc. While XO and From A Basement... would surely fall into my top albums of all time list, Either/Or is by far the one that strikes me the hardest. While it's tough to pick a favorite track, I would probably go with 'Between The Bars' 9 times out of 10. It's rather ironic that its simplicity is what gives the album its strength, as corny as that sounds. For those who always wanted to check out Elliott, this is the perfect starting ground. He is sorely missed.
