I hope you guys got that Wilco reference, if not, download the track for the love of god!
Last night Jen and I witnessed a spectacle. A truly awesome experience from one of Japan's most popular 'drum-rock' bands known as Gevil (10 points if you can translate that page!). Gevil's live show includes SEVEN DRUMS (yes, you read correctly), 2 go-go boys, 2 go-go girls (in Geisha-like outfits and stripper-like dance moves) and a parade of fans that cheer along with every beat of the drum.
Seriously, the fans held up fliers, posters, wore t-shirts and pretty much incessantly cheered for Gevil. Even after they had left the stage for 15 minutes and the always-fabulous Jackie Christie started rocking the decks. Gevil's live show is totally a shtick; striking poses, choreographed bootyshaking and some leftfield instruments thrown in for good measure.
It's the perfect combination of Dungen, Brazilian salsa music, Secret Machines and Clinic. How can you top that??
Here's the EP-opening 'Matsuri Tengoku'.
Following Gevil's electrifying set was an even more electrifying DJ set by the aforementioned, Jackie Christie.
The often-monikered 'Queen Of House' kept the place hopping till the wee hours. At one point Gevil went up the DJ booth and had a dance-off with Ms. Christie. Down below, 2 chicks were having their own dance off, Save The Last Dance-style. It was kind of absolutely amazing!
Lord knows when the band will be back in town but you'd be quite foolish to miss them upon their next visit to the States. Conversely, Jackie will be all over this great city over the next few weeks and as always The Music Slut will keep you posted.
