Joan As Policewoman, Real Life Review

The other day a good friend passed me the debut album from Joan As Policewoman, Real Life. She is probably best known for her collaborations with Rufus Wainwright and Antony, respectively. She was one of the latter's Johnsons for some time, playing violin. Her solo debut is truly remarkable. It's got some Billie Holiday moments, some Holly Golightly moments and it's quite obvious that Cat Power and Beth Orton are major influences of hers. Yet, her voice and style is totally unique. Her voice is both sweet and tart and the dichotomy works gloriously throughout the album. More info on Joan here. Her next show in the city is October 10th at Tonic. It will be a purely solo show for the Joan fans reading this. A rarity since she usually performs with a full band. I can't encourage you enough to check her out.

Here's a track she dueted with Antony on, it's surely one of my favorites on the CD. 'I Defy' (feat. Antony)
