On October 14th, The Music Slut is throwing a pre-CMJ jam at Club Midway. While poking around the internet and picking people's brains for bands to play, someone threw the name Golem my way. And now, I am obsessed. Golem are a Eastern-European punk band along the same lines as Gogol Bordello but with a more Yiddish inspired vibe described as klezmer rock. Check out the video clip below of “Warsaw is Kheml” featuring Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls.

They will be on tour in September with Balkan Beat Box:
9/3 - Pittsburgh, PA @ University of Pittsburgh
9/4 - Toronto, ON @ Ashkenaz Festival
9/6 - Newport, KY @ Southgate House
9/7 - Chicago, IL @ Empty Bottle
9/12 - Asheville, NC @ Orange Peel
9/13 - Blacksburg, VA @ Virginia Tech
9/14 - Philadelphia, PA @ NXNW
9/15 - Baltimore, MD @ Fletchers
9/17 - Ithaca, NY @ Castaways
I am still crossing my fingers that they will concede to play on October 14th for us even though it is smack in the middle of Sukkot.
Also on the horizon in Eastern-European punk news is the New York Gypsy Festival. It takes place September 24th to October 8th. The closing show is awesome and I'll be running home from Munich to go see it:
Sunday, Oct. 8th LQ (511 Lexington Ave, 47th & Lexington) at 9pm - TICKET - $25-$35 - 21+w/ID
Hosted by Eugene Hutz DJ Set (Gogol Bordello)
Kultur Shock "Gypsy Punk" / Seattle
Kolpakov Trio
"Gypsy Music with 7 String Guitar virtouse" / Russia
Acquaragia Drom "Gypsies from Italy"
Kultur Shock are great live and I so far, I am really digging the Italian Gypsy music from Acquaragia Drom. It's a pricey show, but should be worth the dough just for the experience.
