Chris Music Snob mentions that the group's lack of a sold out show is because dance music in America is not as main-stream as it is in the UK, where Basement Jaxx are insanely popular. I think this is true, and also a real shame. Basement Jaxx isn't typical dance music, they are pop, get off your ass and dance like a mad person music. It is Kylie Minogue meets Sly and The Family Stone. It is just some good shit and I was glad I was there last night. A concert hasn't made me dance so much or feel so good since the Scissor Sisters last blew through town.
The top performances of the night include the new Gypsy punk dance tune, 'Hey U', 'Take Me Back to Your House', also from the new album and featuring the hot Martina Sorbara, and the classic 'Where's Your Head At?' The songs where Felix Buxton came out from behind the decks had me the most intrigued. Every person in the group are great, compelling performers but there is something about Felix's manic, serious, singing and dancing that had me the most excited. I also liked it when the girls danced all dirty, hehe.
Some notes I made during the show:
Before Basement Jaxx came on, a cute guy came up to me and asked if I knew where he could find a good time. In my naivite, I thought he was flirting with me. Since I am not so good with the flirty banter, I said “yeah, maybe. What do you have?” That's when he said money and apparently that he had been waiting six years for this concert. I am going to go ahead and assume he was asking to buy drugs from me and not anything that is going to make me want to break his legs. I apologised and said no but couldn't help yelling after him when he walked away “Do I look like I have a good time?!” He shrugged and smiled. Damn he was cute, but my good times are the kind that can't be sold.
I think Basement Jaxx are sponsored by Puma. Even their costumes had Puma details.
As per usual, Webster is overrun with Limeys. Attention NYC British: There are other venues.
Hurrah for Scotland! The brass section all wore kilts and sporans with white t-shirts and sneakers. I LOVE boys in kilts with a t-shirt and trainers.
Slightly perturbed by the Guerrilla fighter outfits. Hasta la victoria siempre!
