I must admit, I'm relatively new to Teitur. In fact, not until the contest we hosted last week here on the site, did I know more than a handful of songs by the European troubadour. After listening to his sophomore release, Stay Under The Stars, all week long, it's painfully clear to see why our contest winners Rebecca & David were gushing about Teitur incessantly after his sold-out appearance at The Living Room.
Teitur will probably get thrown under the 'indie-folk' tag (hell, I even dragged him in there before I heard his this album in full) but there's something more special to his sound than just 'indie-folk'. His voice is delicate and powerful, at times reminiscent of David Gray and at times bringing to mind Damien Rice. His playfulness and whimsical song lyrics/titles bring to mind Sondre Lerche, or even, Final Fantasy on select tracks (yes, he loves some violin like Owen).
Probably one of the strongest tracks on the album is actually a completely random cover. Teitur tackles 'Great Balls of Fire' with a sense of irony, beauty and hilarity. It's quite the crowd-pleaser I hear, as well. I can't urge you enough to check him out! I'm sure the next time he'll come around he'll be headlining Bowery. Let's just hope the legions of 15-year old girls steer clear of the man. Because that would surely be tragic.
