Would You Like Some LCD Soundsystem With That Tofu?

Let me explain...

Upon a recent discussion with good friend and loyal TMS reader, Greg, I decided it was about time I posted about, well, music you hear while in the supermarket. He was telling me about the C-Town in Williamsburg and how they LOVE to blast some 'Fergalicious'. After doing some grocery shopping this week, I paid particular attention to the tunes my local supermarket was spinning.

While retail stores tend to decide musical selections based on market surveys, supermarkets usually have a much less scientific approach. While some opt for the standard - easy-listening/'soft rock' stations, others really mix is up, like the grocery store in my neighborhood. This week while I was walking in, I heard some ABBA Bananarama ('Cruel Summer'), followed by some embarassing pop Christmas tracks and ultimately, upon checkout, was really thrown for a loop when Death Cab For Cutie's 'I Will Follow You Into The Dark' was on the playlist.

What do they play in YOUR supermarket?

PS: I couldn't resist the accompanying picture (a still from Radiohead's brilliant video for 'Fake Plastic Trees')!
