NME just published the following quotes from some of Britrock's heavyweights.
"If it wasn't for James Brown we wouldn't have written 'LSF', it's just pure rhythm 'n' blues and funk. "People have lost a leader, they've lost a character...If he was alive, God bless him, he'd be onstage today."
Ian Brown added that the Stone Roses classic track 'Fools Gold' was inspired by Brown. He revealed: "(John) Squire came up with that riff (for 'Fools Gold') over JB's 'Funky Drummer' loop. To me his music was so soulful and powerful, I just don't think anyone could ever touch him."
Meanwhile, Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie declared the Godfather of soul also invented hip-hop, techo and punk. He said: "I think he freed music and took it into the future. Hip-hop, techno, it all comes from James Brown's late 60's funk records...He changed music, a couple of times. He's an originator."
Who would have guessed James Brown had such an influence on all of their music? I surely didn't.
