Anyone who regularly reads The Music Slut knows that I'm a huge sucker for anything in the 'post-rock' genre. One point of note about this style of music is that almost all the better bands within the genre come from OUTSIDE the US (Explosions In The Sky is the exception).
That is, until I came across Chicago-based, Somme, earlier this week. Somme call themselves the 'post-rock version of We Are Scientists' and I can understand why. The songs are instantly recognizable and just the perfect length (each track is in the 5 minute range). Their debut EP, Weight, is just what I needed this week. Powerful and delicate, alike. The band credits Spacemen 3, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Slow Riot-era Godspeed You Black Emperor as their largest influences. I highly suggest you pay them a listen, or at least visit their MySpace page!
