Antony & The Johnsons - The Lake
Between Antony's debut eponymous LP and his critically acclaimed sophomore effort, I Am A Bird Now, the troubadour gathered his Johnsons and released two spectacular EPs. In 2001, Antony gave us 'I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy' - a live staple to this day, and then in '04 he delivered 'The Lake'.
While 'The Lake' technically reads as an A-side, the EP got a very limited release and to this day, it is nearly impossible to find in a physical record shop (there's even a back-order on Amazon as of this post's published date/time). The other two songs on the EP include 'Fistful Of Love' (which later made it onto the tracklist for I Am A Bird Now) and 'The Horror Has Gone' - one of Antony's most sorrowful songs to date.
As for the title cut, its lyrics are based off of an Edgar Allen Poe poem while its musical arrangement consists solely of the piano and Antony's chilling vocal. The result is phenomenal, or, as Other Music declared upon its release: "blissful and wondrous, Antony is peerless. One of the most essential releases of the year." Listen to the stunning track below.
