Attending a !!! show is kind of like getting a full body workout. By the time the seventy minutes are complete, you feel as if you've participated in vigorous aerobic training, battled an intense hour of kickboxing and ran the 5-mile sprint. Needless to say, you'll be sweating and jumping manically all the same. Last night's !!! show was the best I've ever seen the Brooklyn 8-piece, to date. A truly exceptional gig from the hometown heroes.
Focusing primarily on their latest release, this year's Myth Takes, and their last album, 2005's Louden Up Now, !!! brought a disturbing amount of energy to the Bowery Ballroom. It's been close to a year since I last saw the guys and I nearly forgot what an enigmatic and electrifying frontman, Nic Offer, really is. Complete with a parade of shouting, a series of unusual yet sparkling dance moves and a tendency to utter the F bomb more often than the naughtiest sailor, Nic Offer is irreplaceable and fucking brilliant.
Perhaps the highlight of the evening, not counting the show-closing 'Intensify', would have to be the back-to-back punch of 'Must Be The Moon' and 'Hello? Is This Thing On?' in the middle of the set. For the latter, various !!! band members joined concertgoers in the front few rows to bust a move and sing along with the crowd. Dancetastic.
Check out a great interview with !!! here at Gigwise, or hop over to the band's MySpace page by following this link (beware of the fierce animation). Official (and rarely updated) site can be found here.
