Check out our favorite snippets from her recent interview with Harp Magazine below. Enjoy a Nellie MP3 at bottom of post.
HARP: Do you feel like the protest song is diluted by the notion that protest itself is diluted by rhetoric, and by celebrities taking stands because they have to get PR?
The fact that the problem has been around forever does not render the objection passé. There are many easier ways to get PR than protesting — as long as an injustice continues, people have a responsibility to try and stop it.
HARP: What were the musical models for this record as opposed to the last two?
Proletarian anthems and the fact that I was hoping to become the Ry Cooder of the ukulele… I wanted to write a commercial album. Looks like I failed again.
HARP: What’s the biggest misconception about you?
People have it sussed that I’m crazy. But I’m not, I swear it. You believe me, don’t you? I’m not a bit crazy … hey, there’s a troll in my basement!
