Spiritualized @ Music Hall: Set My Soul On Fire

The last time I saw Spiritualized, back in November at The Apollo Theater, the collective showcased their 'Acoustic Mainlines' show as an exquisite stripped down affair. Saturday night's 'Electric Mainlines' gig was a near opposite: thunderous, audacious & robust. The career spanning set focused on their latest masterpiece, Songs In A&E, but managed to touch upon early favorites as well, most notably a passionate take on 'Lay Back In The Sun' (from 1995's Pure Phase). Accompanied by two gospel singers and four instrumentalists, J Spaceman was positively transfixing. Each & every track was downright triumphant. However, as predicted, the band's final selection of the evening ('Lord Can You Hear Me') was the tune that brought the seated crowd to their feet in rapturous approval. Enjoy a playback of Friday night's DC performance here. Visit Spiritualized on MySpace.

(Setlist) You Lie You Cheat. Shine A Light. Cheapster. Electricity. Soul On Fire. Sweet Talk. Sitting On Fire. Walking With Jesus. Oh Baby. Rated X. Lay Back In The Sun. Death Take Your Fiddle. She Kissed Me. Come Together. Take Me To The Other Side.

(Encore) Lord Can You Hear Me.

Cheeseburger @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg: Tigers!

Part classic rock, part glam, part garage, part fabulously absurd - Cheeseburger put smiles on all attendees at Music Hall Of Williamsburg this past Saturday night. Ever since Jen's glowing review of their Make Music NY gig (back in June of '07), I've been itching to catch the band's live shenanigans. Thankfully, the Brooklyn-based heroes did not disappoint, in the slightest. They dazzled. Cheeseburger successfully melds all of your past and current guilty pleasures into one giant pool of jollification. Visit CB at their MySpace page.

Foals: Live Video From ATJ's CMJ Music Hall Gig

Here's further proof that Oxford-based quintet, Foals, is the real deal. Check out the following clip of this Wednesday's performance of 'Hummer', as recorded by Abbey B for 'Sup Magazine. INCREDIBLE! Download an MP3 of another Foals fave, 'Mathletics', at bottom of post. My review and photos of the gig can be enjoyed via this link.

Foals @ The Music Hall (CMJ): Two Steps Twice

Ever since my initial introduction to Foals, I've been waiting with baited breath to see the UK-based quintet in the flesh. Last night my hunger was sated with an electrifying and fierce set at The Music Hall Of Williamsburg. The band's unique amalgamation of math & garage rock with a healthy dose of dirty electronic is (beyond) a winning combination. CMJers, be *sure* to catch the band by Saturday. I demand it. Foals will be touring Europe with Bloc Party next month. All dates can be found here.

Official Music Slut Ranking: 9/10

The Walkmen Debut New Tune In Brooklyn

Check out the clip below to see the band performing 'What Happened To You?' during their recent visit to Brooklyn's newest venue, The Music Hall Of Williamsburg. The track is a nice return to form (a la Bows & Arrows and their magnificent debut LP, Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone), complete with Hamilton's signature growl and a pulsating bass line. Download a holiday-friendly Walkmen MP3 at bottom of post.

The Music Hall of Williamsburg Announces Upcoming Schedule

The Music Hall of Williamsburg has announced their upcoming line-up beginning with Patti Smith. So far, it's very strong with some great acts like Vampire Weekend, Bonde do Role and CYHSY. Wonder if this will do the same to Studio B that Studio B did to Warsaw.
