The Stills Explain New Album Cover

The band shares these words with AOL's Spinner (regarding Oceans Will Rise): "Our friend bought a skull on eBay for his girlfriend and then he gold leafed it and had his friend photograph it. It's a guy who was excavated from a high Chilean mountain cliff. There were some crowns and hoards of jewelry found around him, so it can be assumed he was once a great king. I'm sure that person did not think they would end up on a Stills record in 2008.* MP3 at bottom.

The Stills Sign To Arts & Crafts

Bye bye, Vice! Here's the full story, courtesy of the band's recent MySpace bulletin from earlier this morning:

*Ladies and Gentlemen; It is with unrivaled joy, and with tremendous feelings of love that we, The Stills, join forces with friends and family as the newest members of the Arts + Crafts label. To each member of this family we would first like to say how proud we are to find ourselves at your sides; an honor, and a privilege. With so many of you already close friends for years now, it could not feel more right and natural. It might very well be impossible to find a warmer, more welcoming, inspiring home.

And all very timely as well. We are rejuvenated by this union. These have been the strangest of years of our lives, exciting, open, huge, frightening, amazing; the places some of us have been, the folk met, months and miles away from home, from reality from The Stills - each in our own ways, sometimes with each other sometimes as if forever without - a lot to take in. Re-evaluations. Premonitions. Drinking. Epiphany. Some of us on pilgrimages that have altered totally certain views of the world, of people, of life. South Pacific, South America, Mexico City, mezcal, Istanbul, Turkish countryside, Japan, alot of thinking alone, not getting languages, anxiety, bliss, wandering, pills, bonfires, beaches, theft, running, hiding, heartbreak, death, weddings, and of course, the requisite sex and poltergeist activity which both play on the mind in each their own respective dizzying ways. Mad, wasted, beautiful, acid snow-globe years.

We have come together stronger than I ever thought possible. Heaps of new music which will comprise our third album, to be recorded in Montreal, will surface officially in the early spring of 2008. We are working diligently and harder than ever before in our lives towards creating and shaping our world, and it is all-consuming and manic. Nonetheless, and thankfully, we will be playing shows during this recording period to maintain that oft-strived for balance of madness and joy that accompanies both the studio bunker and live, wasted jubilation. We will be playing two Toronto shows at Lee's Palace, to commemorate and celebrate our signing to A+C. November 23rd and 24th. We'll also be joining Spoon for a show in Orlando, Florida on November 9th.

Vice fished us out of the ocean and really gave us the chance to on peoples' plates. Without them we actually wouldn't be a band at all...Yes, long story. We love them and wish them all the best of futures. Oliver will never stop wearing their shirts. The possibilities now feel huge and endless. There's a raw current running through the air, like something strong and wicked this way comes. Smells like ozone at night, and electric eels in the deep black water, all through your veins. Low rumblings. Makes you want to smash things and scream for more. Unbelievable.

This is a wonderful time.
There's so much to love.
And so, all of ours to you. All of our love to you.
See you soon friends new and old.

The Stills - Monsoon

'Moosoon' is a stellar Stills track that failed to make it onto the band's sophomore LP, last year's lovely, Without Feathers.

The tune was recorded with Elbo-favorites Land Of Talk, and as I Rock Cleveland declares: 'It finds them defining [their] sound as well as incorporating some good old-fashioned guitar noise'. Well said.

Enjoy the track below.

The Stills Heart Cartwheels

One of my favorite Canadian exports, The Stills, are back with another great video from their sophomore release, last year's Without Feathers. This time the guys get all grayscale, as they cause some major havoc in the mini-mall/office complex! Intrigued? MySpace is hosting the video for 'Helicopters' below.

The Stills @ Bowery Ballroom (Night 1)

Wow. I honestly didn't know what to expect out of The Stills show on Friday.

Last time I saw them, I was about a mile away at Siren Festival (does that even count?) and before that was back in '04 when Logic Will Break You Heart was demanding full attention on my iPod. I saw them nearly a half dozen times promoting that album and adored every single show.

Friday night the boys played their first proper NYC show in quite some time (sorry, Maxwell's doesn't count). And they were great. They split the set between songs from Logic and this year's much underrated Without Feathers beautifully. They even threw in their first EP classic, 'Killer Bees' and early b-side 'Retour A Vega' which went over VERY well with the eager attendees.

The band even joked that the last time they played Bowery Ballroom, The Killers opened for them (it's true, I was there). This was followed by many boooooos. The Stills response: 'Let me tell you something, we showed them!'. Brilliant.

Setlist: It Takes Time/Lola Stars & Stripes/Gender Bombs/The Mountain/Helicopters/Oh Shoplifter/In The Beginning/Changes Are No Good/Baby Blues/Halo The Harpoon/Yesterday Never Tomorrows/Retour A Vega/Love & Death//Killer Bees/Still In Love Song

Art Brut & The Stills @ Siren Festival

2 very different bands, of which I equally adore, 500 feet and 15 minutes apart from one another.

First was The Stills. As you can see from my photos, I was far away, to say the least. Being about 30 or 40 rows back at a festival such as Siren, or any for that matter, really hinders upon your experience. The sound quality is poor, the fans are not actually there to see the bands but more to be seen, and the Cyclone's patrons scream really loudly sometimes. But I refuse to complain about a free show! I've seen The Stills countless times when they were promoting Logic Will Break Your Heart but had yet to see them on the new tour pushing Without Feathers. Their set was short but sweet... It went something like this:

It Takes Time
Lola Stars & Stripes
Gender Bombs
In The End
Helicopters
Oh Shoplifter
In The Beginning
Still In Love Song

----

Art Brut. What can I say about Art Brut that hasn't already been said? It was the same shtick as always but in a different order this time (opening with 'Formed A Band' and ending with the 1-2 punch of 'My Little Brother' and 'Good Weekend'). The sweaty attendees ate it up. We were eating out of Eddie's hand and loved every second of it.

This shot is about 2 minutes after their set ended as I yelled for Eddie to smile for me. He complied.
