Man In Gray & Illinois @ Plug Awards Concert 11/17: Don't Get Killed

Last weekend, Matt and I risked getting mugged and carjacked to go see one of our favourite NYC acts, Man in Gray, at the Plug Awards in "East Williamsburg" Brooklyn.

Man in Gray won the Plug Award's contest to have the privilege of opening the show and they really kicked it off well. In fact, I think they put some of the headliners to shame (for one of them, Matt and I actually fled to the quiet of my car to wait it out).

This is actually the first chance I have had to see the group live. Their show is energetic, tight, fast-paced and really comes at you quick. It was surprising to see all that power come out of the small frame of front girl Christina. The group could only play for a short time, so I am excited for their set at The Delancey this Saturday.

The other band worth mentioning from the show is a group called Illinois, from Pennsylvania funnily enough. Any mention of Illinois and music immediately bring to mind that singer of states, Sufjan Stevens, and perhaps Illinois' southern twang is reminiscent of Stevens' just a bit but they really are a band to make note of in their own right. From their first few chords, Bryan of Man In Gray and I both expected lead singer Chris to yell "DOWN TO REST!" The sound was immediately familiar as that of O'Death's but within a few bars, the music quickly found its own blend of country indie rock with a really polished quality to it. Illinois is playing Pianos December 13th and 14th.
