Review: The Harry Smith Project Live DVD

Ok, I feel like I should at least explain who Harry Smith is before I delve into the review of this DVD. I did not know who he was and I gather that the majority of you won't either. Simply put, he 'is considered to be a major driving force in the folk revival of the 60s' (thank you, Tripwire).

The DVD features Beck, Nick Cave, Lou Reed and Beth Orton amongst other big names. Each artist tackles a different classic folk tune. I was quite surprised that each artist does a phenomenal job with each tune. In particular, Kate and Anna McGarrigle's attempt at 'Sugar Baby' is flawless. As you could guess, Beck's track is also amazing (it sounds very Sea Change-y, shock!). I highly recommend this compilation for anyone who enjoys... well, enjoys American music. Particularly for anyone who wants to hear the building blocks for modern-day Americana, folk, alt-country and blues. The only thing missing from this DVD is a tune from Jeff Tweedy; that would have made this collection perfect! Regardless, this is still a must-own. Add it to your X-mas lists immediately!
