Devendra Banhart - Fistful Of Love
It's only appropriate that TWB&R's thirteenth entry shares a common thread to the twelfth. Whereas Antony's 'The Lake' was featured in the column's last contribution, this post is dedicated to Devendra Banhart's cover of Antony's tune 'Fistful Of Love'.
Devendra and Antony have been good friends for quite some time and have shared a stage together on countless occasions. However, the most recognized collaboration between the two songsmiths would definitely be the recorded version of 'Spiralling', featured on Antony's I Am A Bird Now.
As far as Devendra's cover of 'Fistful Of Love' - the ditty takes on a whole new life when sung by Mr. Freak Folk himself. Antony's take on the tune has been descirbed as "an intoxicating concoction that mixes soul with an almost heroic sense of masochism." If I were to write a blurb on Devendra's version, I would have to say that it manages to keep the original sentiment of the tune in tact, while adding a psychedelic and uplifting vibe to the track - oh and it's probably one of the best covers I've heard to date.
