Sondre Lerche @ Canal Room: Suffused With Love

Yesterday afternoon TMS dropped by Tribeca Film Festival's Music Lounge for an intimate, brief and charming set by our favorite Norwegian singer/songwriter, Sondre Lerche. With a half hour time allotment, Sondre ran through a sampling of his entire catalog (from 2002's Faces Down to last year's Dan In Real Life soundtrack). As per usual with Sondre's gigs (we've now attended ten over the last six years), his glowing charisma and pop sensibility permeated wondrously. Chris Garneau @ Canal Room: An Invisible Charm

Over the course of the last 12 months, my adoration for Brooklyn native, Chris Garneau, has grown stronger & stronger with each passing day. The 1st time I caught his live show was in May of '07 (opening for Frog Eyes). A few days before Xmas, I was fortunate enough to see Chris again at Brooklyn's Southpaw. While both of those gigs were exceptional, last night's headlining slot at Canal Room was easily his most cohesive, pristine & noble to date.

The 50-minute set focused on 2007's debut LP, Music For Tourists, and selections from his forthcoming sophomore effort (due out sometime this fall). Chris usually performs with a handful of backing musicians but last night he was only supported by one (superb) cellist. The result was a delicate and balanced composite of keys and strings. Perhaps the track that benefited most from this arrangement would be (TMS favorite) 'Baby's Romance'. The fusion of a dimly lit stage, Chris's breathtaking vocals & a well-behaved crowd made the evening feel as close to a seance as anything I've encountered in quite some time. Europeans can witness the magic first hand on his forthcoming tour (all dates here).

The Sons & Heirs @ Canal Room: Handsome Devils

It should come as no surprise to habitual readers of the site that I'm a massive Morrissey & Smiths fan (in every sense of the word). So much so, that when I first discovered The Sons & Heirs - an NYC-based Smiths tribute act - I was beyond eager to learn more. In the spring of last year, I interviewed the band (read the full Q&A here). Last night, I was fortunate enough to catch their live show and - to my pleasure - it was genuinely delightful.

The Sons & Heirs consist of: 'Ronnissey', 'Ravi' Marr, 'Jonny' Rourke & 'Kevin' Joyce. While it may sound trite, the 4-piece can imitate the legendary Brits to a T. Ronnissey's Mozzer impression is so spot-on that quite frankly, it's almost mind-boggling. Everything from his sarcastic stage banter, choice of wardrobe, haircut, facial expressions, hand gestures, floor squirming, and most importantly - vocal delivery is frighteningly outstanding. Pair that with the three other 'faux Smiths' and the recipe is complete.

For 90 minutes, The Sons & Heirs performed a bevy of Smiths hits and rarities ('Sheila Take A Bow', 'Hand In Glove', 'Nowhere Fast', 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now', etc.), and even treated us to a handful of Morrissey's solo tunes. Joined by very special guest, Spencer Cobrin (a former member of Moz's backing band), The Sons & Heirs serenaded the crowd with 'Glamorous Glue', 'Suedehead', 'Sister I'm A Poet', 'The National Front Disco' & 'Billy Budd'. The Sons & Heirs ended their set with a blistering take on 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' which included stage invaders and outstretched arms.

As someone who usually runs from cover bands like the wind, I strongly urge you to check out The Sons & Heirs in the flesh. They're one of the very few who've mastered the art.

Ra Ra Riot & Mixel Pixel @ Canal Room: This'll Be On My Videotape

Last night, the fine folks over at Baeble Music put together a fantastic showcase, featuring one of my favorite local bands, Mixel Pixel, as well as one of my preferred picks for 'next big thing', Ra Ra Riot.

First up was New York's very own Mixel Pixel.

I could tell from a few bewildered faces in the crowd that they didn't know what to expect from the Mixel Pixel crew. But by the end of their set, the vast majority of the baffled were smiling ear to ear as MP closed the show with psych and melody-heavy, 'I Am The Contact Kid'. The last time we saw Mixel Pixel, opening for Man Man this past January (our review of that gig here), we became MP believers.

Their set at Canal Room only ballooned our heart even more. They have an unparalled energy and originality that we adore.

Next up, CMJ all-stars Ra Ra Riot. Their EP is now (finally) complete and will be out in a few short months. Last night served as a preview of that material.

The last time we saw Ra Ra Riot, twice, last November (reviews here & here!), we were blown away. Their unique combination of Strokes-influenced 3-minute ditties, Broken Social Scene-esque cohesiveness and yes, Arcade Fire instrumentation is truly a winning combination.

Their 40-minute set was quite the crowd pleaser. The loyal (underage?) fans in the front few rows grooving/shouting along as if they've followed the band for years. I predict a gargantuan year for Ra Ra Riot.

The guys and gals will be at SXSW next month, we highly recommend your attendance at one of their gigs, should you be heading down to Austin. Disappointed, you will not be.

The Walkmen @ Canal Room: Short And Sweet

On Thursday evening, both Jen and I went to the DL AOL Party. For those who haven't checked out the DL yet, it's a weekly program on AOL that is a video-based indie music, news & pop culture web show.

The show is hosted by Sara Schaefer, an up and coming stand-up comic (who is friggin' hysterical) and pop culture-obsessed. To celebrate the first week of The DL, AOL hosted a fabulous party at Canal Room featuring the aforementioned Sara Schaefer and TMS all-time-faves, The Walkmen.
