Peter Hook Shares His Post-New Order Plans

Billboard reports: *Peter Hook has no interest in being idle. The former New Order/Joy Division bassist is making progress with his new project Freebase, which gathers Smiths bassist Andy Rourke & Stone Roses' Mani. "I've sat down with Mani & Rourke and we desperately want to play the festivals next year... We're going to work our balls off up until Christmas to get this f*cking record finished." Hook reckons the album is more than a third, but less than half, complete.

A Freebase work-in-progress, "I Envy Us," is posted on Hook's MySpace page because, he explains, "I was sick of talking about it without it being there." As previously reported, some of Manchester's finest frontmen have been involved in the project, including the Charlatans' Tim Burgess and Stone Roses' Ian Brown. "With the demise of New Order, I was happy to just not play for a while but now I'm missing it. And I want to get into it as soon as possible. There's quite a few things as a musician that I want to get into." Hook has his fingers in a few other music pies. The artist has penned a track for Tony Wilson, the late entrepreneur who signed Joy Division & New Order to his Factory Records label, and will reform Monaco for a late September charity performance in Manchester, England. But after engaging in a recent war of words with his New Order bandmates, Hook admits there is no hope for a reunion. "We're getting on like a house on fire. We've patched up. But the bottom line is we won't be working together again."*

New Order Records New Instrumentals For 'Control'

"Exit", "Hypnosis" and "Get Out" are all brand new instrumentals recorded by New Order (before their split) for the upcoming Ian Curtis-based film, Control. The soundtrack, which is out in the UK on 10/1, does not have a U.S. release date, thus far. However, the Anton Corbjin-directed flic will make its way towards American theaters on October 10th. Can't wait!

RIP Tony Wilson

NME reports: *Anthony H. Wilson, co-founder of Factory Records, has died of a heart attack today at the age of 57. Wilson is best known for signing legendary bands including Joy Division and New Order to his label, and as owner of the Hacienda nightclub in Manchester. He played a key role in the Madchester scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, signing the Happy Mondays. Wilson passed away on this evening in the hospital after suffering a heart attack that his doctor said was unrelated to his recent battle with cancer.

Professor Robert Hawkins, his doctor at Christie hospital, told the Guardian: "It's very sad. He died as a result of something unrelated to his cancer. His cancer was responding well to treatment but obviously did contribute to his poor health". Recently it was recommended he take the drug Sutent after chemotherapy failed to treat the disease effectively, but the NHS refused to pay for the £3500-a-month treatment. However, the Happy Mondays and other bands he signed had started a charity fund to help pay for Wilson's treatment. His family are reportedly declining to comment at this time, but thanked the staff at the MRI and Christie who have provided "fantastic" care for him over the last few months.*

New Order Still Soldiering On, Minus One

This week Bernard Summer and Steve Morris made the following statement: "After 30 years in a band together we are very disappointed that Hooky has decided to go to the press and announce unilaterally that New Order have split up. We would have hoped that he could have approached us personally first. He does not speak for all the band, therefore we can only assume he no longer wants to be a part of New Order. New Order have NOT split up, they continue to exist".

Meanwhile, Peter Hook shared this quote with NME last week (in addition to hinting at the split months back): "We've decided not to work together anymore. It's been on-off-on for a while and last time we just went out separate ways."

Peter Hook Responds To 'Control'

The former Joy Division & New Order member speaks to XFM about his reaction to the Ian Curtis-based, critically revered biopic, Control:

"I really enjoyed it... But it was like having your heart stamped on. The weirdest thing was at the end, when it really hurt and everybody started clapping. It would've been nice to have a dignified silence.

"You're sat there thinking "Fuck me I lived that!" It was like being dissected. And then I went to take a piss and Ian and Bernard Sumner were next to me... well the actors that played them and I was like that... 'Aaaaah!'. That was surreal.

"The way I always like to look at it is that you can judge how good a film is by how many people go to take a piss during it, and only two people went for a piss - Bernard and a 70-year-old woman."

New Order Keyboardist Laments At Unemployment

Via ContactMusic: *NEW ORDER rocker STEPHEN MORRIS has been unemployed since the band split last year, because he isn't qualified to do anything else.

The 49-year-old keyboardist fears he has been left on the employment scrap heap, because he has been a musician all his life.

He says, "I've been to the dole office (job centre) and I discovered I wasn't qualified to do anything else.

"I see no reason to stop making music. I'll just see what happens."*

Peter Hook: New Order = Split

We knew this was coming... we just didn't want to believe it.

Peter Hook tells XFM the following regarding Perry Farrell's Satellite Party and New Order's potential involvement in the festival: "I spoke to Perry, and he asked me to play bass, as he'd heard about New Order splitting up. Well yeah, me and Bernard (Sumner) aren't working together."

When asked if this split is similar to the one the band took nearly two decade ago, Hook says: "Bernard went off for a break with Electronic, but that was different. But it's like the boy who cried wolf this time."

I sense some hostility, don't you? Either way, this is sad sad news.

The legendary New Order (and Joy Division) bassist, Peter Hook, has recruited a bevy of Britpop's finest for his new project entitled, Freebase. Included in the mix are former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke, former Stone Roses/current Primal Scream bassist Mani, Charlatans' singer Tim Burgess, Liam Gallagher, Ian Brown and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie.

Hook tells Billboard: "It's great to write again. I'm really excited about it." And so are we! This megagroup sounds awesome! The Good, The Bad & The Queen better watch their backs! Incidentally, we'd pay good $$ for a Damon/Peter catfight.

New Order On Permanent Hiatus?

Seems that way, here's a few key lines from an interview that Indiependentmusic just posted. Their outlook on the future is rather grim, don't ya think?

Stephen Morris: This is a strange time to be New Order... It was good a couple of years ago when everyone was saying we were "god-like geniuses" (NME gave them an award with that name) and the fans recognized the band. In some point now there're a lot of New Orders around and we're the old guys of the neighbourhood, so we should stop for a while and let them take our place.... I don't know, it's good to be remembered, it's really an honor.

I could say there won't be New Order for a couple of years, but as i said before we're bad (at) planning things so let's see what happens... The trick is not getting attached to what you do because you'll be repeating the same thing again and again. Sometimes you just have to stop what you're doing and get ready to learn again instead of becoming a copy machine.

Peter Hook: "It's time that we stop and think about what do we want to do", he said. "It's wonderful to stop when you have to do it. Sometimes when you're lucky to have it all you don't appreciate it as you should. So you need a reminder of how things were when you didn't have it all. In this moment we do have it all, so maybe it's time that we lose it, maybe to start feeding again. That's how i feel."

Power Corruption and Lies: Classic Album #1

I've always been a huge New Order fan but mostly stuck to their Greatest Hits (why do they have 3 of these anyway?) until recently. I just can't get enough of their epic Power Corruption & Lies. It's fucking genius and deserves all the attention it received over the last 20 years and will receive for the next 20 years. Influential, stunning, direct and glorious.

For me, the highlight of the album lies within the first track, "Age Of Consent". A song that will surely fall within my top 20 greatest songs of all time. The urgency and vocal delivery in this song cannot be topped... the only thing that comes close are select tracks on The Bends. To this day it is being loved and covered, as proved by The Arcade Fire, here.

It's such an amazing feeling to re-discover a classic release and treat it as if its a newborn baby. Never was there such a case as PCL. It holds a dear place in my heart. It's my Shiloh Nouvel.
