Man In Gray & Sure Juror @ Pianos: Dancing On A Friday Night
On the final night of November (otherwise known as this past Friday evening), Jen and I traveled down to LES haven, Pianos, to check out two brightly shining local acts - Brooklyn's Man In Gray and Brooklyn-via-Philly's Sure Juror. The gig was co-presented by the fashionable men behind Stereoactive NYC & Ear Farm. Whereas the last time I saw Sure Juror (review here), I was trying to fully grasp SJ's influences and unified sound, I got a much better idea of the band's intentions upon my second encounter. Vocally, Sure Juror's multiple singers bring to mind everyone from British Sea Power to The Shins and even, at times, a tinge of Kurt Cobain. Musically, the collective's pendulum swings back and forth between post-punk, straightforward indie-pop and orchestral meandering (a la Andrew Bird). The unique mixing pot is truly (if not surprisingly) engaging. Learn more about Sure Juror here at their official site. Jukebox The Ghost & Exit Clov @ Pianos: Residency #1
Friday night marked my third visit to Jukebox The Ghost(town). In addition to a rousing set at the day portion of After The Jump Festival, the trio also piqued my interest during an earlier visit to Pianos back in March (review here). Now, nearly five months have passed and Jukebox The Ghost has lined up a spectacular residency at the L.E.S. haven.
At the opening evening of Jukebox's well-received stay, the DC-based band not only packed the house but also won over a slew of stoic and/or jaded Le Loup fans planted firmly within the first few rows. Jukebox's 45-minute set highlighted their lone EP as well as some new tunes and a handful of diligently-chosen covers. Absolutely ace. Catch Jukebox this Friday with A Brief Smile & Wakey! Following Jukebox was the District quintet that majestically lit up The Music Slut's Holiday Show of '06 - Exit Clov! The Automatic @ Pianos: Keep Your Eyes Peeled!
Wow, just wow. Welsh foursome, The Automatic stormed into Pianos last night for a rousing 45-minute set. I left with my mouth agape and in a total state of shock. This show was hands down one of the most energetic gigs I've ever been a part of.
It's an especially difficult task to attempt to describe The Automatic's sound to unheard ears. On record, the band can easily be compared to Maximo Park or Kaiser Chiefs. However, their live show is an entirely different story.
Try to imagine what would happen if Sex Pistol Johnny Rotten fronted a band of outlaws that were just as equally influenced by Thursday as they were early Prodigy. Synth/percussion/vocal mastermind, Pennie, is a sort of wee-sized caged animal, combining his fidgety keyboard fiddling with the most intense punk roars I've heard since At The Drive-In. Throughout the gig, he will run directly into the crowd, shove any and all fans in his way, steal your camera (evidence a few pictures below), dangle and shout from pipes/speaker tops/chairs, and demand dancing all while blowing the fuses in his keyboard and engaging in the best microphone twirling I've ever been witness to.
The energy that The Automatic bring to their live show is undeniably infectious. Even the most taciturn of attendees were busting a move (except the guy in the blue jacket above, seriously, I think he was the only one not in a frenzied state), pushing and being pushed, and shielding their faces from the falling mike stands! As the band ran through their UK singles, 'Raoul' and 'Monster', as well as their own unique take on Talking Heads' 'Life During Wartime', the cheers only increased in volume.
Luckily for most Americans, the Brits will be back in The States this summer! Sadly for The Sluts, all of the scheduled dates (as part of The Warped Tour) fail to stop anywhere near NYC. Jukebox The Ghost @ Pianos: Put Another Dime In
When everybody I know who's ever seen a Jukebox The Ghost gig informed me that the band has a Ben Folds-esque quality to their music, I'll admit, I was a little nervous. Not that I didn't enjoy Whatever & Ever Amen like everybody other alt-rock lover in the mid-90's but I've never really fallen for his style of piano-driven quirkiness, completely.
Good news is that while Jukebox The Ghost definitely does have a Ben Folds influence (perhaps it's the keyboardist and his jaunty stage antics), the DC 3-piece also has an acerbic feel a la Stellastarr* or even, since we are talking about DC, a tinge of Fugazi. The band cites Queen, Ben Folds Five, Apollo Sunshine, Tally Hall and Muse as their musical models. I guess you'll just have to listen and judge for yourself. While the band does seem like it could get the ever-popular 'buzzworthy' tag on VH1 (I guess that's good or bad depending on how you look at things), there's undeniably something about Jukebox's tunes that's instantly appealing.
The 40-minute set included tunes about the end of the world, the beginning of relationships and everything in between. Finally something decent (excluding Exit Clov) to come out of The District! It's been a while; especially since the demise of Q And Not U, Black Eyes and D-Plan (RIP, all those great acts).

Sure Juror @ Pianos: Smut Meet Slut
I've been meaning to catch local 7-piece (!) Sure Juror for quite some time now; last night Jen and I finally got the opportunity to check them out during the last night of their Pianos residency.
After listening to the 4 featured tracks on the band's MySpace page, I was itching to hear how the songs from their latest album, Smut, translated into a live setting. The answer: very well. My favorite of the night was the title track which is a perfect combination of early Smiths with a dash of Godspeed! You Black Emperor. Believe it!
Though the band swears (as we chatted with them after the show) that they ran through a setlist of ten songs, Jen and I felt like the show went by in 10-12 minutes (turns out it was just under a half hour). We did enjoy their set but were aching for some more. Perhaps next time we will get our wish.
Intrigued? They will be at Union Hall with Muggabears (sponsored by Battering Room) on 2/16!

The Lisps @ Pianos: Pepper Spray My Heart Away
Well, it's about time! Somehow failed attempt after failed attempt, I FINALLY witnessed The Lisps' live show last night at Pianos. And they did not disappoint.
The band's 45-minute set included many tunes from their debut EP, The Vain The Modest And The Dead, as well as a handful of newbies and even a spoken word performance with assistance from their friend 'William S Burroughs' (love it!).
The poem was about what a lackluster year 2006 had been, and it was read with extreme disgust... hysterical! Definitely a highlight of the night, as was the set-closing 'Pepper Spray', which is easily my favorite track of theirs.
Having never seen The Lisps before I definitely felt an anti-folk vibe to many of their songs (a la a less confrontational/naughty Moldy Peaches). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Cesar was a long lost relative to Adam Green! Cesar and Sammy (pictured) exchange and combine vocals for nearly their entire set always running the fine line between hilarity and provocativeness. Is the South Bronx the new Sidewalk Cafe? Hmm.
Missed the show last night? Well, you are in luck because they will be in Greenpoint tonight (keep in mind the G train is acting all sorts of weird this weekend) for the Pop Tarts/Battering Room-curated bill. If you can brave the MTA buses, I suggest you pay The Lisps a visit. More info on that event here!

The Twilight Sad Bring Melancholy To Pianos
The Scottish band craze continues this week with the new buzzers, The Twilight Sad. I heard some of their stuff on MySpace and think it's quite intriguing. Definitely worth checking out their FREE Fat Cat-headlining show at Pianos this Sunday at least. This will serve as the last night of their residency on Ludlow St.The show is sponsored by Stereogum and we here at The Music Slut have a FREE CD to giveaway to the first person who e-mails us with the subject line 'The Twilight Sad'.

The Head Set @ Pianos 10/28: The Game
The Saturday before Halloween, one of my favourite New York bands covered one of my favourite all time albums. It was outrageous.
For the past two Halloweens, The Head Set have performed a complete album by another group. Last year it was The Police and this year was Queen's The Game. Mike, the drummer, told me that they practiced for a month which really came through in their performance. As a certified Queen groupie, the songs were pretty spot on. Freddie would have been proud.
When I arrived to Pianos, the place was packed. I shoved my way through to somewhere in the middle and jumped around to 'A thing called love.'
The Head Set are one of those bands whom everyone loves, packs out a venue but inexplicably are not signed. Their talent is huge, their personalities wonderful and hey, they're not bad looking either.
As Matt said below, we also saw The Head Set at CMJ and during the show just kept turning to each other saying, 'Damn, these guys are good.' Come out to the record release party at the Annex on the 16th, you won't be sorry.

Thursday night right after The Walkmen, I stumbled over to Pianos to catch DC's finest, The Fake Accents. They had the utter misfortune of playing after a terrible (I'm sorry, they were) local girl band whose name I shall not mention. This however, didn't postone, nor stop the rock n roll.
I've not seen the band in close to 2 years and was thrilled to find that their sound has totally expanded and their live show has become truly a moving experience. It's almost as if Mogwai, Yo La Tengo and Pavement all decided to form a supergroup. This gives you a clue of what The Fake Accents bring to the scene.
Those lucky enough to catch them on their first-ever East Coast tour should also take heed to the limited edition T-shirts, as they are fucking awesome, and one-of-a-kind.
Their debut LP, The Big Disconnect, is available now at their shows and on their site! Add it to your Christmas lists!

Monsters are Waiting @ Pianos 7/19: What Were You Thinking?
Lead singer of Monsters are Waiting, Annalee, is either the worst dancer in the world or she is suffering from some sort of affliction. Either way, it wasn't cute. My advice to Matt during the show was, don't look directly at her. I spent most of the show staring at the floor myself.
Never at a show have I experienced such terrible stage presence, she flapped her arms like a chicken and squawked at one point, so contradictory to the music. It really is a shame, because MaW does actually have some good stuff. They remind me very much of a female fronted Hourly Radio. It's dark, post rocky with a little Manic Street Preachers. The stand out track from them would definitely be 'Fascination.' It's worth checking out their MySpace, but their show may be another story- people were actually leaving during the middle of the set. Ultragrrrl and Nightmare of a Boyfriend, however, showed up just as people were beginning to get annoyed and walk out.

Monsters are Waiting @ Pianos 7/19: What Were You Thinking?
Lead singer of Monsters are Waiting, Annalee, is either the worst dancer in the world or she is suffering from some sort of affliction. Either way, it wasn't cute. My advice to Matt during the show was, don't look directly at her. I spent most of the show staring at the floor myself.
Never at a show have I experienced such terrible stage presence, she flapped her arms like a chicken and squawked at one point, so contradictory to the music. It really is a shame, because MaW does actually have some good stuff. They remind me very much of a female fronted Hourly Radio. It's dark, post rocky with a little Manic Street Preachers. The stand out track from them would definitely be 'Fascination.' It's worth checking out their MySpace, but their show may be another story- people were actually leaving during the middle of the set. Ultragrrrl and Nightmare of a Boyfriend, however, showed up just as people were beginning to get annoyed and walk out.
