Jonny Greenwood Brings 'Popcorn' To NYC

The rumors were true! Here's more info on what to expect, as lifted from At Ease Web: *The Wordless Music Series has announced preliminary details of its 2007-08 season, which will include the much-anticipated U.S. premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Popcorn Superhet Receiver for string orchestra, which will take place at St. Paul the Apostle in New York City on January 16 and 17, 2008.

Commissioned by the BBC in 2005, when Jonny Greenwood was named the BBC’s Composer-in-Residence, and premiered in November 2006 at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London by the BBC Concert Orchestra, “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” is a 20-minute work inspired by the phenomenon of white noise and the music of Krzysztof Penderecki, György Ligeti, and Olivier Messiaen. For its U.S. premiere, the work has been revised by the composer and will be performed by a string orchestra comprising 18 violins, 6 violas, 6 cellos, and 4 double basses.

The Wordless Music Orchestra will be led by conductor Brad Lubman, known for his work conducting the Steve Reich Ensemble, and will feature a one-time gathering of 50 instrumentalists, who represent many of the brightest talents in New York’s classical and new-music community. They come from a diverse group of bands and ensembles who have drawn inspiration from the music of Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead throughout the group’s 15-year history, including members of Alarm Will Sound and So Percussion.*

Tickets to both shows (on sale this Friday) and additional info can be found via this link.

Beirut Announces 3 More NYC Shows + Reissues 'Elephant Gun'

First things first, the next batch of Beirut shows are as follows: September 24th, 25th and 26th @ NYC's Society For Ethical Culture.

Keep on eye on The Worldless Music Series' official site for more info as it becomes publicly available.

Secondly, Bitchfork is reporting that Beirut is set to reissue his 'Elephant Gun' single as a 7" with French ditty, 'La Moribond' (by Jacques Brel) as the tune's B-side.

I guess Zach wasn't joking when he told us, earlier this year, that he's currently infatuated with 'old French songs'. Beirut enthusiasts can pick up the UK-only vinyl on June 25th.

Is Jonny Greenwood Readying A Solo North American Tour?

Hmm. We just got a tip (thanks Jason!) that Jonny Greenwood (of Radiohead) will be performing this autumn in association with The Wordless Music Series here in NY.

If you recall, he's recorded Bodysong (the soundtrack to movie of the same name) in addition to releasing a compilation of his favorite reggae tunes (The Music Slut review of that LP can be found here) over the last few years, in addition to his work with Radiohead.

Have any of you heard/read of any further dates just yet? We're highly curious...

Also tapped for later this year at The Wordless Music Series: Mum, Beirut & Do Me Say Think. Full schedule can be found here.
