Mika Remains 'Label'-less Despite OUT Cover

No disrespect to Mika, but for a guy who supposedly doesn't like to discuss his sexuality, he sure does, at every opportunity he possibly can. Marketing ploy? Honestly sexually confused? Happily bisexual? Private? Here's his latest quote from Out's July issue, of which he's the cover model and story.

"Anyone can label me, but I'm not willing to label myself...Anybody who says that I don't talk about sexuality or that I don't politically sexualize my music because of taboos, because of being afraid of [not] selling records, is completely wrong. I've made a record that doesn't compromise in any way what I'm allowed or not allowed to say in my lyrics."

The fine folks over at Towleroad inform us that 'OUT originally requested Mika for the cover of their April issue, in order to coincide with the release date of his album in the U.S., but were refused. According to our source, Mika's "handlers" wanted to do a cover but only if it came out a few months down the road, because they were concerned about breaking into the mainstream market were Mika pigeonholed as a "gay artist" right out of the gate.'

Mika + P. Wolf = Amazing

Seems like Jen's favorite artist of the moment and my favorite artist of the moment have joined forces. Hallelujah.

The always fantastic, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, has some info on the collaboration between Patrick Wolf & Mika, and even (sadly) informs us that it probably won't get a proper release as it's only intended for promo purposes.

Wondering exactly what the duet is? Well, Patrick Wolf has taken Mika's 'Love Today' and totally reworked it while keeping the original sentiment of the song intact. The end result is a sort of dirty electro pop masterpiece, complete with Mika's falsetto and Patrick Wolf's intense laptop/keyboard twiddling; something you'd hear while dancing at 2am unbeknownst, on a Saturday night at Studio B. Mika Doesn't Want To Be Compared To Freddie Mercury

Via ContactMusic: Pop sensation MIKA hopes critics will stop comparing him to British music legends QUEEN - because he doesn't want to be associated with FREDDIE MERCURY's dress sense. The GRACE KELLY star, who yesterday (26MAR07) dubbed SCISSOR SISTERS "mediocre", admits he finds it tough when the press liken his music to that released by the group's late flamboyant frontman. He tells the New York Daily News, "I get tired of talking about it. I would be willing to more if that's where I was coming from. Just so long as they don't compare our dress sense."

AOL Music’s Breakers competition to select the hottest new artists has been separated into four categories, with winners in each being selected by the public starting Feb. 16. Winners to be announced on March 30th.

#1: Don't Give a F#@!: Amy Winehouse, Mims and Rich Boy
#2: Mr. Sensitive: James Morrison, Landon Pigg and Secondhand Serenade
#3: As Heard on TV: Mika, Corbin Bleu and Young Love

What does the winner get? We have no clue. Although we gather it's airplay during an episode of the latest season of Real World or something ridiculous like that.

Young Love will be at Bowery Ballroom on February 28th; tickets on sale now. It also happens to be the last date on his month-long tour. He's pictured with Ice-T on the right, I have no idea how or why, where or when but it's a fantastic shot!

Weighing in on the Mika Debate

Granted, I haven't heard much (well alright, maybe just the single 'Grace Kelly') but so far, so good for this supposed Pop Idol reject.

Mika's first single has bumped Britain's X-Factor winner, Leona Lewis, out of the number one slot. Leona's song (Kelly Clarkson's? Does Simon Cowell just get every other female winner on his shows to sing this song?) 'A Moment like this' spent 4 weeks as the number one song, amazing. Sidenote: The Music Slut's favourite group of wee Dundonians, The View, is number 3 on that chart with 'Same Jeans'- sweet.

I have a soft spot for anything a bit dancy, a bit glam, and right now, Mika seems to be feeding my Young Love, Scissor Sisters hang over with a perfectly spicy bloody mary of just that.

One question for Mika though, why the sexuality secrecy? Why would being proud of who you are, no matter whom you fancy, make a difference in the quality of your music? Be gay, be straight, be a transgendered monkey for all I care, just get me on the dance floor.
